Flavoring perils get harder look
Probe grows; chemicals linked to lung disease

Lauren’s Comments: So they say that a flavoring chemical used in many foods is “okay” to consume but highly toxic if inhaled. Workers that handle the chemicals are at risk but tell me…who really wants to CONSUME an ingredient that is THAT toxic if inhaled?

Lauren’s Comments: Bovine Growth Hormone rearing its ugly Monsanto head! Yet another reason to use ONLY organic dairy and animal products. Note that NYT requires you to register for free before viewing these articles. IMHO, it’s very worth the hassle.

Another article on organic standards and how they may be a’ changin’.
http://www.csmonitor.com/2006/0517/p13s01-lifo.html

Interesting article about a pig farmer who stops cold turkey all antiobiotics given to his hogs. His leg was punctured by a boar and it swelled to twice the size. The infection did not respond to antibiotics and it ends up it was a mutated form of a staph infection. The mutation it is assumed is due to the massive amounts of antibiotics given to the hogs from birth.

05/02/2006: “Organic goes mainstream, is it a good thing?”

Organic food is finally becoming “mainstream”. After years of only being able to find so called natural foods at health food stores, one can now find a myriad of natural foods at mainstream supermarkets. Organic milk, organic eggs, organic cereal, organic frozen foods, etc…….are all now easily found in most supermarkets at fairly decent prices. Walmart, Costco, Safeway, and more are all touting natural foods sections. But does this come at a cost? I think so. The following article is a very long, good read that hopefully will make everyone think about where they spend their organic dollars. There’s more reason now than ever to invest in your local farms, CSAs and dairies.

04/05/2006: “TOXIC PARABENS!”

If you are still using products with Parabens in them, there’s reason to consider eliminating them. Parabens (methyl, butyl, propyl) are used in most personal care, including so called “natural” brands as a preservative. Disturbing questions have been raised by the Journal Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology and by Thomas Connor, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Environmental Sciences at the University of Texas-Houston School of Public Health about the safety of parabens. The estrogenic effects of these preservatives and others is concerning and demands further testing.

First link below lists companies that offer paraben free products (as well as pthalate free).
