Human Genes in Rice

The Organic Consumers Association has a call for comments on two dockets the USDA is considering regarding the approval of human genes in rice in Missouri.  BUT I just read that the USDA has already given preliminary approval for the planting of rice with human genes in Kansas.  Here is a link to more info;

And the Missouri information which also provides info on how to send your comments is following.

Think Walmart is Organic? Think Again!

I pondered over this entries title and almost put, “Like being Screwed Over? Shop at Walmart!”.  There are apparently Organic store tags being posted on items that are not organic.  We don’t shop there anyhow for a number of reasons (have I posted them here?) but still, many have to and it kills me that they might not catch the very misleading signs.

Terressentials

Terressentials is a brand that I haven’t tried yet but has been on my radar for a number of years now.  I keep emailing them pleading with them to start an affiliate program. ; )

 If toxic chemicals in your personal care are of a concern to you, THIS looks like the brand to try and it comes highly recommended by many HP mamas.  Today I stumbled upon a site offering some of the shampoo on clearance so its a good way to check it out.

Earth Easy!

Every once in a while, a new site comes along that really wows me.  This site may not be very new at all but I just stumbled upon it and am so glad I did.  It is wonderfully simplistic and yet chock full of REAL information.  Check it out;

Cool site on Whole Foods Eating

Today, I stumbled upon a really cool site.  Its chock full of good reading;  recipes, nutrition information, organics, etc.

Not Approved for Human Consumption!

GMOs!  Some people don’t agree that there is even an issue.  I don’t agree.  I think we’re using the human population as some sort of strange science experiment, one that I don’t want my kids involved with.

Many of us are familiar with the GMO corn fiasco a few years back when “not fit for human consumption” corn was mingling with corn to be eaten by humans.  Now its happening again…over and over…this time with Rice (something that feeds most of the world).

An experimental strain of GMO Rice has been found in US and European crops.  sigh.  Its one reason why we strive for all organic.

Supermarket Confusion

I heard Marion Nestle on NPR the other day and it sent me searching the NPR archives to share here. I couldn’t find exactly what I was listening to but found an excerpt from Marion Nestle’s book, What to Eat: An Aisle by Aisle Guide to Saavy Food Choices and Good Eating. The research she did was tremendous and even she was confused at all the labeling and such. I haven’t read the book yet but put it on my “list”. Making good choices is hard enough, we don’t need supermarkets adding to the confusion!

Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides

EWG has just put out its 4th edition of the downloadable (pdf) wallet sized flyer on pesticides in produce.  In it they list the top 12 fruits/veggies with the highest and lowest pesticide loads.  Making it easier to choose when to buy conventional and when to stick with the better organic.  We can’t always buy organic all the time, but now you can feel better knowing which fruits/veggies you can more safely buy conventionally.
