Rescue Recess
December 18th, 2006 Posted in Parenting, This n ThatJan on the HP list shared this, something that I think should concern most if not all parents. With an 8 year old in school, I’ve often complained of the lack of free play time I see. I happen to LOVE our school and the kids do have recess and rewards for running laps (1/4 mile per day for the younger kids) daily before playing. But how many schools don’t offer this? The kids also get free time on Fridays to play at whichever station they choose and do whatever they want.
Anyhow, if recess is in jeapardy in some places, it’s of great concern. Children NEED that free play time.

Thanks for sharing this. While I don’t have stats (is anyone keeping track), I can tell you that children here in FL have less recess than ever before due to FCAT. In fact, when I was a brand new teacher, I tried to take my 3rd graders out for recess and was told there was simply no time for it. You might assume they got PE everyday, but that wasn’t the case either. They got PE either one day a week or for a full week every month. Children need to run and play–especially boys. By the way, esearch shows that children with “ADHD” experience relief from their “symptoms” when they’re provided the opportunity to EXERCISE!

I live in NJ and the children here get one day a week in gym class. If the gym teacher is absent they may get none. ALSO, the children are punished with this taken away for forgetting homework and such.
It is outragous the way this country is going. I have had enough!
KIds need free time to get out of the class room and relieve some energy!
