NC Bugs are BIG!

November 2nd, 2006 Posted in This n That

I know I have talked about bugs here in NC before but I have a few photos of what I am talking about so figured I’d share. Let’s see if this works.

The other morning we were greeted with the biggest Praying Mantis I’ve ever seen (they are all over the place here) and a frog on our front porch;

    Hmm…not sure what the “ha” is trying to imply there but I took your advice and did more research. Its so hard to identify these things at times.

    Banana spiders in the US are NOT poisonous, it is actually another term for Orb Weavers. BUT I don’t think this is (or was) an orb weaver now. I think it is a Cross Spider once known as a “McKinley spider”. It would have been too funny if that K was a G, heh?

    It has all the traits, the zigzag, the sitting on her web in an X form, the shaking to warn us to stay back, etc.

    OH btw….South American Brown Banana Spiders ARE poisonous. I hope we don’t have any here in the US but I’m sure they’ll find their way here.

    Hi Elizabeth,
    I’ve been here in NC for 2 years now and I’ve never seen a centipede. I’m guessing that they do exist here but so far haven’t seen a one. I saw them all the time in NJ…in our basement. There aren’t many basements here in NC. Hope that helps.
